7/7/18:</br>Dayramir González

Dayramir González is the next Cuban powerhouse to land here @exuberance. Prepare for wonderousness.

He was already a star when he moved to the States 10 years ago with 3 Cubadisco awards for his album Habana enTRANCÉ. He has a mentor and champion in Chucho Valdes who included Dayramir in a 2012 Carnegie Hall series alongside Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Danilo Perez and Chucho himself. A summa cum laude graduate at Berklee School of Music, González is co-founder and music director of The Art School of Contemporary Performance & Creativity in the South Bronx.

He provocatively describes his recent album The Grand Concourse as “a tribute to Buena Vista Social Club, Mozart, and John Coltrane mixed with Dayramir’s spices.” The album gets boffo attention in Larry Blumenfeld’s WSJ review calling Mr. Gonzalez “a stunningly gifted composer and arranger” who displays “assured and sometimes daring pianism” with “a sensitive yet bold touch.”

Don’t doubt the accolades. Just listen:

Dayramir plays here @exuberance in trio.

Drummer Raphael Pannier grew up in Paris, starting drums at age 5 to begin playing professionally at 13. With degrees from Berklee and Manhattan School of Music, he has studied with Terri Lyne Carrington, Ralph Peterson Jr,  Dave Samuels, Mark Turner and Alex Sipiagin among others. He’s played with the likes of Steve Wilson, Lee Ritenour, Aaron Goldberg, Eric Lewis, and Lage Lund. Raphael Pannier just released a new album as co-leader of “The Euro-American Jazz Quartet.”

Dean Torrey began playing the bass at age 8. During his college years he was mentored by bassists Doug Weiss, Scott Colley, Lynn Seaton and Joe Sanders. He has worked with Muhal Richard Abrams, AACM percussionist/composer Thurman Barker, Francisco Mela, Ed Cherry, Tivon Pennicott, pianist Micah Thomas, and the Onyx Collective.

NYC meets Cuba meets Yoruba tradition. This is a trio not to be missed.
