3/15/17:</br>Chano Domínguez--jazz in Spanish

Here @exuberance we have been talking about the convergence of various cultural sources informing jazz. Let's add flamenco.

I first encountered Chano Domínguez in Calle 54—Fernando Trueba’s stunning 2000 latin jazz documentary.

Both flamenco and Chano come from southern-most Spain—Andalusia. Like jazz, Lionel Rolfe observes, “Flamenco is defiantly improvisational; like many great musical traditions such as blues it is music that comes out of suffering and survival, love and death.” Passionate music for sure.

Check out this performance from the great Carlos Saura’s film Iberia:

Chano has recorded over 20 albums. Two recent ones I’m enjoying:

Chano Dominguez is creating what may be the first organic combination of jazz and flamenco. …And it wasn’t devised in a record company boardroom. The fusion is in the musician. It is the individual who has two cultures.

The pianist drinks from a musical well situated where four continents meet: Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. So unique is his ability to quote from various musical dialects that it seems almost trite to suggest that here is a fusion of the European and the African-American and the Middle-Eastern musics. It is more like a cultural collision that begins not cerebrally, but deep within the soul and the spirit.

Even though my music is different, we speak a common language-the language of jazz. But, as I always say, I play jazz in Spanish.—Chano Domínguez

Joining Chano are the great @exuberance alumnae Arturo Stable and Luques Curtis.  This is going to be an incredible evening.

@exuberance parties at Matt’s are by invitation only to provide a dignified, comfortable and acoustically ideal setting for worthwhile art and ideas. Cellphones and other devices are to be holstered during the performances. Between sets, conviviality rules.
